A shared beginning
It began in 1958, when the creative paths of Saul Steinberg and Delvaux first crossed in Brussels. The city was animated by the forward-looking energy of Expo 58, devoted to progress, innovation and modern life.
It was in this context that The Americans and Le Brillant were revealed, both conceived as companions to a new way of living, where architecture, design and craftsmanship would move together.
What started as a singular encounter has since become an ongoing collaboration, sustained today through close dialogue between Delvaux and the Saul Steinberg Foundation.
A Conversation in Motion
From Paris to Brussels, and from Brussels to New York, this story follows a continuous dialogue between architecture, art and craftsmanship. Sustained through ongoing collaboration, the relationship between Delvaux and Saul Steinberg is not fixed in time, it lives, travels and evolves. Like Le Brillant itself, it moves forward while remaining faithful to its original heritage.

That original movement was reawakened in Paris. During FW25, at Place Vendôme, Delvaux presented an immersive installation bringing together Steinberg’s work and Le Brillant. Visitors were invited to move through the mirrored space, to carry the bag, to become part of the scenography. It was here that Delvaux unveiled Le Brillant Tempo, a more supple evolution of its emblematic design, where architectural structure gently gives way to fluidity. From Paris, the story gently found its way back to where it began.

Through the joint commitment of Delvaux, the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium and the Saul Steinberg Foundation, The Americans was fully restored and brought back into public view. At L’Arsenal, among Delvaux’s artisans, replicas of the work now echo the same values of precision, patience and respect for materials. Exhibited again in Brussels in 2025, the mural completed a symbolic return to its birthplace, renewed for a new generation.

The journey then crossed the Atlantic to New York, the city that shaped Steinberg’s artistic language. At Delvaux’s Fifth Avenue flagship, a representation of The Cocktail Party from The Americans is presented alongside original works from the Foundation. In this urban setting, the dialogue becomes intimate and vibrant, reconnecting the work with the energy that inspired it.
